Interview with Cozy Mystery Author Zanna Mackenzie

What got you interested writing Cozy Mystery books?

I’ve always loved reading books with an element of mystery in them but I like them to be light-hearted at the same time – so cozies were perfect for me to write!

Tell us a little about the Amber Reed series.

Amber works for the local newspaper in the village of Palstone and is tasked with making up the horoscopes! She’s bored with her life and seeking excitement – which she gets when she lands right in the middle of a celebrity murder mystery investigation. Soon she’s battling to convince the handsome special agent from the Celebrity Crimes Investigation Agency (CCIA) that she can help him catch the killer!  The series has 6 books in it so far, a new book on the horizon, plus a free book available via BookFunnel for those who want to try the series for free to see if they like Amber’s sleuthing adventures. On Trial (the free book in the Amber Reed series available on BookFunnel) can be downloaded here:

Also, tell the readers about the Glen Falls series.

My Glen Falls cozy mysteries are a little different because they have a magical element to them with myths, spells, witches and all sorts of supernatural elements to the mystery plot. Much like my Amber Reed series and my Recipe For Disaster series (they’re culinary cozy mysteries in that series) the Glen Falls books bring together fun, romance and an intriguing mystery to solve.

If you could live the life of one of your characters, would you?

Hmm... good question! Not sure I would to be honest – I don’t think I could stand the stress of all that sleuthing!!!

What's your favorite character that you have created and why?

Another excellent question! It would be a close call between Amber from the Amber Reed series and Lizzie from the Recipe For Disaster series. Amber is probably my favorite character to write though as she’s great fun but also has many insecurities and various issues which I can relate to. I like the fact Lizzie lives on a farm in the glorious Lake District though so that makes this decision a tough one because the Lakes is one of my favorite places in the world – and I’ve always dreamed of living on a smallholding and growing fruit, veg, herbs and flowers.

Do you have any real-life stories that you have incorporated into one of your books?

No, my books are entirely created from my imagination.

If you had to choose a different career other than writing, what would it be?

If I was clever enough and could afford the study required then I’d love to be a meteorologist as weather forecasting has fascinated me since I was a little girl. I used to have a little weather ‘station’ at home that my Dad built for me and every day I’d write down in a book the temperature maximum and minimum, rain fall amounts, wind direction etc.

What is your favorite book that you have ever written and why?

Probably the latest book in the Amber Reed series because it was set in the glorious Caribbean so was great fun to research and write – sadly I didn’t get to go to the Caribbean though! I used to be a travel agent so love to do in depth research on countries, customs, local foods etc. I set up a Pinterest board for the book with lots of fabulous pictures to inspire me. You can see the board on Pinterest at:
Another reason this book is my favorite is that the on-again / off-again romance between Amber and special agent Charlie is such fun to write! Who knows what will happen between the two of them – even I’m not sure how things will end up!

What do you like to do with your time when you're not writing?

I love gardening! I’m always pottering about the garden doing deadheading, watering, feeding, mowing the lawn, planting seeds etc. I also enjoy time with family, walking our 5 dogs in the countryside, time spent in nature and reading.

What's a fun fact that your readers might not know about you?

That I’m a weather geek? That I used to be a qualified therapist in clinical aromatherapy, naturopathic nutrition and various other natural therapies? That I was a travel agent many (many!) years ago? That my absolute favorite food is cheese and biscuits?

What do you have in store for your readers next?

I’m excited to be part of a Christmas cozy mystery anthology with 11 other cozy authors and will be penning a new Celebrity Crimes Investigation Agency story for that. I’m also working on the next Amber Reed Mystery as well.
