Interview With Cozy Mystery Author Maria Grazia Swan

What got you interested writing Cozy Mystery books?

I always considered myself a mystery writer having embraced the stories of Agatha Christie since I was about 10 years old. Oh, I read her books in Italian, of course.

Tell us a little about the Mina Adventures series.

Love Thy Sister, Book 1 was originally sold as a stand-alone.  Years later, when I received the rights back I decided I had so much more to write about Mina and so I came up with Mina Adventures because I had no idea where I was going to go with the story. Well, to Italy and back, for starters…

Also, tell the readers about the Baker Girls series.

Baker Girls is my only series with Arizona locale, my other series are split between Italy and Orange County, California. So this feels like home and for years I had Great Danes, plus I learned how to drive in a Fiat 500.

If you could live the life of one of your characters, would you?

All my main characters are female-Italian born-living in the United States.  Lella York is over 50, Mina is approaching 30 and works with rescued pets, Monica is a Realtor..I’m over 50, I volunteer at Home Fur Good, the inspiration for the No Kill Shelter Mina runs, and I sell Real Estate in Phoenix Az. I guess that answers that question. Right?

What's your favorite character that you have created and why?

Diego Moran. He was supposed to be killed in 2 chapters.  The ladies in my critique group wouldn’t let him die. And for that I thank them.

Do you have any real-life stories that you have incorporated into one of your books?

Most of my books are inspired by real events. Especially Gemini Moon. The opening scene on Ponte Vecchio happened to me, way back.

If you had to choose a different career other than writing, what would it be?

I’ve already had all the careers I desired. This is it…

What is your favorite book that you have ever written and why?

Italian Summer, did a lot of crying while writing it because I really did go back home and cried in front of the house where I grew up, the 3 story my grandfather built.

What do you like to do with your time when you're not writing?

I sell real estate, love yoga and at the moment I’m redoing a townhouse from floor to roof. My retirement home.

What's a fun fact that your readers might not know about you?

I spent an evening in a mamas an place, in Tokyo. You know, the places for members only where the girls entertain the male clients? I was the only non-Asian there..and no, I was not working, just observing.

What do you have in store for your readers next?

Need to finish book #3 of the Baker Girls, but I will be in Italy during Fall and I want to explore small churches and such for an Italian wedding, that would be for Mina’s adventures. That’s all folks!
